The JAMA Network Web sites include the full text of JAMA and the JAMA specialty journals, published by the American Medical Association. All the journals publish Online First content. In addition, JAMA is published weekly, 48 issues per year, and new issues are posted on the Web site at 3 PM CT on Tuesdays; JAMA Internal Medicine is published twice a month at 3 PM CT; JAMA DermatologyJAMA PsychiatryJAMA Neurology, JAMA OphthalmologyJAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Surgery are published monthly on Mondays at 3 PM CT; and JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery is published bimonthly on Mondays at 3 PM. The Archives of Neurology & Psychiatry began publication in 1919 and, in 1959, became 2 separate journals: Archives of Neurology and Archives of General Psychiatry. The Archives of Family Medicine was published from 1992 through 2000 and ceased publication at the end of 2000; it can now be accessed for free.  In 2013, their names changes to JAMA Neurology and JAMA Psychiatry, respectively.

To perform a simple search, enter a key word(s) in the Search field at the upper right hand corner of the page to find articles that pertain to the key word. Use Advanced Search to search on specific fields within articles (across the entire JAMA Network at http://jamanetwork.com/advancedSearch.aspx), or specific to a particular journal at that journal's advanced search page. 

Browse by Topic

Topic Collections group articles by topic across the JAMA Network at http://jamanetwork.com/collections.aspx, or by a specific journal at that journal's own Topic Collections page.

Alerts

Alerts allow users to be notified when something new publishes to The JAMA Network like new issues, online first articles, new items in a topic collection or new results to a search.

     

Journal Publication Alerts

Users recieve an email whenever their journal publishes a new issue or online first (published ahead of print) article. Access My Account --> My Email Alerts --> Add/Edit Journal Publication Alerts after you login to set your new publication alert preferences to specify which journals in The JAMA Network you would like to follow.

Topic Collection Alerts

Users recieve an email whenever a new article publishes to their favorite topic on The JAMA Network. Go to any topic collection and select Email Alerts in the collection page. Once you confirm, you will start to receive an alert email whenver new content publishes within that topic (ie Cardiology)

Search Alerts

Users recieve an email whenever a new article publishes that matches a search that is frequently run on the site. After running a search, on the search results page, select Get Alerts on this Search at the top of the results. Once confirmed you will receive an email everytime new content publishes in The JAMA Network that matches that search querry. Note: you can apply any filter desired in the result to refine your search down to very specific details to make the alert very refined

Popular Features

RSS feeds, Share, and personal widget placement are free to everyone. E-mail Alerts and E-mail a colleague require free registration. Here are some other important features that enable customization, sharing and content retrieval:

 

     

Widget Customization

Users can drag & drop widgets on the right column of the article page to personalize the placement of the widgets.  Users can move widgets that they like higher on the column for easier navigation according to their needs.

Users can export the image content of an article to Microsoft PowerPoint.  Content usage is subject to AMA Terms & Conditions of Use.

Share Link to Facebook / Twitter

Users can share links to articles on Facebook and Twitter quickly and easily by clicking the Share link in the article toolbox.  The user can select the social network of choice in the popup window as shown.

Article Commentary

Some articles are available for commenting. Users provide their name and a disclosure of conflicts of interest before commenting.

View Large Figures & Tables

Users can get an expanded view of any figure or table within an article they have access to.  By clicking the expand icon (magnifying glass) on the corner of the figure or table, the user can get a medium sized image inline.  When the user clicks View Large under the image, they can get the the largest version available for view.

Access Options

Subscription Access

 

The full text of JAMA and the specialty journals from 1998 forward is available to subscribing institutions, paid subscribers, and AMA members. Features like Export to PowerPoint and View Large Figures & Tables require that the user have access to the article in order to use.

Open Access Articles

Research articles are freely available after 6 months for JAMA and 12 months for the JAMA specialty journals from 1998 forward. Patient education features such as the JAMA Patient Page and JAMA Pediatrics for Patients are freely available.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

CME is available to paid subscribers and AMA members as part of their subscription.  All other users can purchase CME tokens that can be used across all journals to claim credit after completing courses.  CME courses in JAMA Network journals can be browsed by topic across all journals on The JAMA Network CME center at http://jama.jamanetwork.com/cme.aspx

 

Pay-Per-View (PPV)

Individual articles also may be purchased. Content published prior to 1998 is included in the Backfiles collection; individuals may purchase single articles, and a perpetual access license is available for purchase by institutions. AMA members also receive access to the Backfiles as part of their membership.

Open Access for Institutions in Poor Countries

 

Institutions in countries with GNP per capita below $3000 can receive full text access to JAMA Network Journals free of charge or at greatly reduced rates through the World Health Organization's Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) program. The full text of JAMA is also available to institutions with the Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) program. JAMA also participates in the National Library of Medicine's Emergency Access Initiative.

Navigating The Journals

Articles can be accessed from the tables of contents of Current or All Issues or from the Topic Collections page, which groups articles by topic area. Articles can also be found by using the Search field at the top of each page or by using the Advanced Search feature, which permits searching on specific fields within the article. You may search all of The JAMA Network Journals by using the publications' Advanced Search. You also may browse all the journals by Topic Collection. Within Topic Collections, you can view articles within a specific section and search by keyword.
