The goal of this volume (IIIA) is to present data, based on a critical review of the literature as well as the author's extensive clinical experience, that will allow a better understanding and, hence, better treatment of intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Specific surgical techniques are to be discussed in the next published book (IIIB) in the series. The general topics covered in this volume include the historical aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of AVMs. In addition, embryologic, pathologic, and hemodynamic aspects of AVMs are presented. The diagnostic modalities used to identify and plan treatment of these lesions are discussed and profusely illustrated. The last sections of the book deal with attempts at gaining a better understanding of the microsurgical anatomy
