AB Mental Retardation is the first volume of a series of annual reviews on this subject. When an individual contributor faces his assignment for the first time, he has to decide how far back he should go in his review before discussing the most recent developments. The 18 authors handled this problem in different ways. Because most of them dealt with the subject in depth, the book turns out to be a very suitable reference work in which the newcomer and student can orient and prepare themselves for future reviews and more detailed studies in special areas.In reviewing this book one is somewhat at a disadvantage since one reviewer does not feel equally comfortable with all chapters. A clinical psychologist, for instance, would get immersed in the first three chapters and could review them expertly but might find it difficult to deal with the chapters on neuropathology, neurophysiology, and metabolism,
