To the Editor Cerebral venous air embolism (CVAE) is reported more frequently and may be associated with poor neurological outcome or even mortality.1,2 It is often associated with certain iatrogenic procedures,2 in particular central venous access may play a major role in the incidence of this serious event.1,35 However, in contrast to cerebral arterial air embolism, awareness of CVAE is still lacking; its retrograde mechanism seems to be not fully understood and might therefore be grossly underreported.3,4
