Electrophysiologic Recording Techniques

The book starts with a chapter on field potentials, their mathematical description, and how to record them. The first chapter's author, L. Stan Leung, addresses the pitfalls and advantages of single vs multichannel silicon probe recordings and how to model and display recordings as current source densities. The writing is straightforward, the methods precise, and the style crisp and succinct. The chapter reads like a technical manual, competent and dry.

Chapter 2 is a complex analysis of current source densities, which might be useful for some readers. A monkey experiment is discussed: a visual stimulus was given, with electrodes recording occipital rhythms in neuronal layers. Data analysis suggests that early alpha oscillations may alter early and late evoked components, and the authors in this chapter suggest this may be due to differential responses to glutamate's AMPA or NMDA receptors. This chapter would have been better left in a neuroscience journal.
